Albert Nobbs

Albert Nobbs is a drama set in late nineteenth-century Ireland, largely in a Dublin hotel where a quiet, reserved butler named Albert has worked for years. Albert is a woman who has lived as a man for roughly three decades, a disguise adopted out of necessity in a society with few options for women on their own. Diligent and frugal, Albert keeps to herself and saves what she earns, drawing little notice from colleagues or guests. That careful existence is unsettled by the arrival of a painter, Hubert Page, who is given a room in the hotel's attic, and by Albert's growing entanglement in the lives and romantic troubles of the younger staff around him, including the maid Helen Dawes and a handyman named Joe Mackins.

Rodrigo García directed the film, which sits between Mother and Child and Delirium in the chronological list of his features. Glenn Close plays Albert and also wrote the screenplay with John Banville and Gabriella Prekop, and produced alongside Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn. The cast includes Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Janet McTeer, Pauline Collins and Brenda Fricker, with forty-three credited performers in all.
