Albert Nobbs struggles to survive in late 19th century Ireland, where women aren't encouraged to be independent. Posing as a man, so she can work as a butler in Dublin's most posh hotel, Albert meets a handsome painter and looks to escape the lie she has been living.
What's left behind the scenes
- A screen adaptation of the story "The Extraordinary Life of Albert Nobbs" by writer George Moore.
- Glenn Close had already played Albert Nobbs in a play of the same name in 1982, and spent 15 years trying to get George Moore’s story adapted for the screen. In the early 2000s, the film’s production finally moved forward. István Szabó was confirmed as the director. However, there wasn’t enough funding allocated for the film’s creation at that time.
- Filming began in December 2010. Amanda Seyfried and Orlando Bloom were considered for the roles of Helen Doose and Joe, but were later replaced by Mia Wasikowska and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
- Mia Wasikowska agreed to star in the film without even reading the script. It was enough for her that her friend and mentor Rodrigo Garcia would be directing.
