Short description

Fourteen years after his first documentary trip through the United States, the Kazakh journalist Borat Sagdiyev is sent back to America, this time with his teenage daughter Tutar in tow. His official mission involves a gift for a senior American political figure, but the plan falls apart, and father and daughter end up travelling the country together during the COVID-19 pandemic and a presidential election campaign. Tutar, raised on a distorted idea of what an American woman should be, pursues her own ambitions as Borat tries to keep her safe.

The film is a comedy directed by Jason Woliner, his second feature after Dinner with Friends with Brett Gelman and Friends, and it follows his later Borat: VHS Cassette of Material Deemed "Sub-Acceptable" by Kazakhstan Ministry of Censorship and Circumcision in his filmography. Sacha Baron Cohen returns as Borat and wrote the screenplay with Anthony Hines and Peter Baynham; Maria Bakalova plays Tutar. Tom Hanks appears as himself, alongside Dani Popescu, Manuel Vieru and Miroslav Tolj in supporting roles.

Released in October 2020, the film runs 96 minutes. It holds a 6.6 rating on IMDb from around 164,000 votes and a 6.4 on TMDB from roughly 3,000 votes, while critics gave it 7.2 from over 300 reviews, a higher assessment than that of the general audiences.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The full title of the film can be translated as "Borat: A Gift of a Pornographic Monkey to Vice President Michael Pence in the Name of the Recently Humiliated People of Kazakhstan."
  • Professional caregiver Janice Jones was paid $3,600 for her participation in the filming, but she – like many others – believed it would be a genuine documentary. Jones did not realize that Sacha Baron Cohen and Maria Bakalova were playing fictional characters. She later praised Bakalova's performance and admitted that she had been fooled.
  • Scenes in the Kazakh settlement were filmed in Romania, but not in the same location as the previous film (due to the negative reaction of the local population to the earlier movie). Actors of Romanian origin were specifically hired for some roles for this purpose.
  • Sacha Baron Cohen spent almost five hours in the restroom of the venue where the Conservative Political Action Conference was held in 2020, until former US Vice President Mike Pence took to the stage.
  • Sacha Baron Cohen spent five days with conservative politicians Jerry Holleman and Jim Russell, remaining in character as Borat the entire time.
