A Hong Kong crime boss known as Tsou is ambushed and killed, and the question of who takes his place splits the organisation he led. Three younger men stand to inherit his position, among them Wai, who left the triad years earlier and now runs a legitimate fishing business. Tsou's wishes point to Wai as his successor, but Wai is reluctant to return to that life, and the ambitious Tai and the more cautious Sou are also in the running. Trust breaks down as the survivors try to work out who was behind the killing, and the suspicion falls on those closest to the dead man.
Just Heroes was released in Hong Kong in September 1989. It was directed by Wu Ma, the fourth of the films he directed in chronological order, and by John Woo, for whom it was the sixth of the twenty-two films he directed, coming between The Killer and Bullet in the Head. The screenplay is by Ni Kuang and Hau Chi-Keung, and the picture was produced by Tsui Hark and Alan Ng Siu-Hung. The cast is led by David Chiang Da-Wei as Wai, Danny Lee Sau-Yin as Sou and Chen Kuan-Tai as Tai, with Tien Niu, Cally Kwong Mei-Wan and Wu Ma also appearing.
The film took about 1 million US dollars at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 1,200 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes.
