The Kang family leaves the city for a large house in the mountains, intending to run it as a guesthouse for hikers on the remote trails nearby. The business gets off to a poor start. Their first paying guest is found dead the next morning, having taken his own life, and rather than risk the reputation of the place, the family buries the body in the woods. That decision sets a pattern. More visitors arrive, and more of them die, and the family grows increasingly desperate to keep the deaths hidden and the guesthouse running.
The Quiet Family was released in 1998 and marks Kim Jee-woon's debut as director, the first entry in a filmography that later includes A Tale of Two Sisters, A Bittersweet Life and I Saw the Devil. Kim also wrote the screenplay. The cast is led by Park In-hwan and Na Moon-hee as the parents, Dae-goo and Soon-rye, with Choi Min-sik as Dae-goo's brother Chang-goo and Song Kang-ho as the son Young-min, alongside Lee Yoon-seong and Go Ho-kyung. It was produced by Lee Eun through Myung Films.
On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 6.4 out of 10 from five reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 7 out of 10 from 217 votes, so general viewers rate it noticeably higher than the small group of professional reviewers. The mixed genres of comedy, crime, horror and thriller reflect a film that treats a grim premise as black farce.
