Black Cat, White Cat

Matko Destanov is a small-time hustler living along the Danube with his teenage son Zare. After a shady deal collapses, he finds himself in debt to Dadan Karambolo, a gangster far more successful than he is. The two strike a bargain: Zare will marry Dadan's sister Afrodita, and the debt will be wiped out. The arrangement suits the adults, but the young people involved have other ideas about who they want to spend their lives with.

Emir Kusturica directed and co-wrote the film with Gordan Mihić. It followed Underground from 1995 in the director's filmography and was made with a cast of thirty-four credited performers, among them Bajram Severdzan, Srđan 'Žika' Todorović and Branka Katić. The production was a German-French-Yugoslav co-production.

The film holds an 8 out of 10 rating on IMDb from around 59,000 votes and 7.6 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 850 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 34 reviews places it somewhat below the level of audience approval, though not far below. The large gap in vote counts between the two audience platforms suggests it has reached a much wider public following on IMDb.
