Short description
Cry Macho is a drama set in 1979. Mike Milo, a former rodeo star who now breeds horses, has fallen on hard times. His old employer, Howard Polk, gives him a job: travel into Mexico and bring back Howard's young son, Rafo, who lives there with his mother. Mike takes the assignment, but the trip does not go as planned. He and the boy end up crossing Texas by back roads, and the long journey becomes harder than either expected, while the two develop a bond along the way.
Clint Eastwood directed and stars as Mike Milo, with Eduardo Minett as Rafo, Natalia Traven as Marta, Dwight Yoakam as Howard Polk, Fernanda Urrejola as Leta, and Horacio García Rojas as Aurelio. The screenplay was written by N. Richard Nash and Nick Schenk, based on Nash's novel. Eastwood also produced with Albert S. Ruddy and Tim Moore. The film is the 39th of the 40 features he has directed, coming between Richard Jewell in 2019 and Juror #2 in 2024.
Released in September 2021, the film runs 104 minutes. It earned about 17 million dollars worldwide against a budget of 33 million. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.7 from roughly 36,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 from about 1,100 votes. A critics' rating stands at 5.6 from 178 reviews.

- N. Richard Nash wrote the screenplay in the 1970s, but 20th Century Fox rejected it twice. Nash reworked the screenplay into a novel, which was published on June 11, 1975. Critics received the novel favorably, and Nash returned to the idea of placing the screenplay somewhere, without changing a single word in it, and offered it to several studios. This happened shortly before his death in 2000.
- Before this film, Clint Eastwood (director and lead actor) had made several attempts to bring this story to the screen, but the project remained unrealized for almost 30 years. In 1991, work on the project began in Mexico, with Roy Scheider slated to play the lead role, but the project was soon shut down. Another attempt – this time with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role – was made in 2011. The film would have marked Schwarzenegger's return to acting after a break caused by his entry into politics. However, as in the first case, the project was closed after a while.
