The Nightingale

Set in Tasmania in 1825, The Nightingale follows Clare, a young Irish convict transported to the British colony. After a violent act destroys her family, she sets out to pursue the British officer responsible. She hires Billy, an Aboriginal tracker carrying his own history of violence, and the two travel through the wilderness together, bound by a shared desire for retribution.

Jennifer Kent wrote and directed the film, her second feature after The Babadook. Aisling Franciosi plays Clare, with Sam Claflin as Hawkins, Baykali Ganambarr as Billy, and supporting turns from Damon Herriman, Harry Greenwood and Ewen Leslie. Produced by Bruna Papandrea, Steve Hutensky and Kent, the film was made across Australia, Canada and the United States by Bron Studios, Screen Australia, FilmNation Entertainment and Creative Wealth Media Finance. It runs 136 minutes and blends drama, thriller and western elements.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from 697 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 7.5 out of 10 from 243 reviews, placing critical appreciation somewhat above the general audience response. The Nightingale came four years after Kent's debut, and she again worked from her own screenplay.
