Short description
Murakawa, an aging Tokyo yakuza tiring of gangster life, is sent by his boss to Okinawa along with a few of his henchmen to help end a gang war, supposedly as mediators between two warring clans. He finds that the dispute between the clans is insignificant and whilst wondering why he was sent to Okinawa at all, his group is attacked in an ambush. The survivors flee and make a decision to lay low at the beach while they await further instructions.

- The film's title uses a musical term. A sonatina (a sonata without elaboration) is a work that has a basic sonata form but is shorter and lighter in character or technically simpler than a typical sonata; the term is most often applied to solo keyboard works, though sonatinas for violin and piano, and sometimes for other instruments, also exist. According to Takeshi Kitano (who played Aniki Murakawa here), when a piano student reaches the stage of studying sonatinas, they must make a decision: whether to pursue classical, jazz, or popular music. His character in the film had to make a decision of equal gravity.
