Oslo, August 31st

Anders is a 34-year-old man nearing the end of a drug rehabilitation programme at a clinic in the countryside. Granted a day's leave to travel into Oslo for a job interview, he instead drifts through the city, seeking out old friends and acquaintances he has not seen in years. A day of encounters becomes a reckoning with the opportunities he has wasted and the people he has disappointed, and with his own sense that his life is already over even though he is still young. As the summer's last day gives way to night, the past weighs against the possibility of love and of starting again.

Joachim Trier directed the film, his second feature after Reprise, and wrote the screenplay with Eskil Vogt. Anders Danielsen Lie leads the cast as Anders, alongside Malin Crépin, Hans Olav Brenner, Ingrid Olava, Tone Beate Mostraum and Øystein Røger. It is a co-production between Denmark, Norway and Sweden, and it had a modest worldwide box office take of about 1 million USD.

Audience responses on IMDb, where the film holds 7.6/10 from around 34,000 votes, and on TMDB, where it sits at 7.5/10 from roughly 530 votes, are positive. A critics' rating of 8.3/10 from 73 reviews places it somewhat higher than those audience scores.
