The Pope's Exorcist

The Pope's Exorcist follows Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican's chief exorcist, who is called to examine a possessed young boy. The entity inhabiting the child specifically asked for Amorth, and as he looks into the case he finds evidence of a conspiracy the Church has long worked to conceal. The film draws on Amorth's real files and on his memoirs recounting his work as an exorcist; Russell Crowe plays him, with Daniel Zovatto as Father Esquibel, Alex Essoe as Julia, Peter DeSouza-Feighoney as Henry, Ralph Ineson as the voice of Asmodeus and Laurel Marsden as Amy. Julius Avery directed from a screenplay by Michael Petroni and Evan Spiliotopoulos.

The film was released in April 2023 and runs 103 minutes. It is a British, Spanish and American production made for about 18 million dollars, and it took roughly 77 million dollars worldwide, a strong return against its budget. It is Avery's fourth feature, arriving after Son of a Gun, Overlord and Samaritan.

Audience response was moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 101,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 from a much smaller base of 3,284. A critics' rating of 5.2 from 110 reviews places it below both audience scores, indicating that reviewers were less positive than viewers.
