Short description
Leena Klammer escapes from a psychiatric facility in Estonia and travels to the United States, where she assumes the identity of Esther, a girl from a wealthy family who went missing years earlier. Taken in by the Albrights, she plans to exploit their trust for her own ends. Her scheme runs into an obstacle in Tricia Albright, a mother determined to protect her household at any cost.
Orphan: First Kill is a 2022 horror thriller directed by William Brent Bell, working from a screenplay by David Coggeshall. It stands seventh in the chronological list of the director's features, arriving after Separation and before Lord of Misrule. Isabelle Fuhrman plays the adult Leena, who passes as a child, a role she had originated in an earlier film; Julia Stiles plays Tricia, with Rossif Sutherland as Allen, Matthew Finlan as Gunnar and Hiro Kanagawa as Detective Donnan among the cast.
Produced by Entertainment One, Dark Castle Entertainment and Eagle Vision, the film had a reported budget of about 10 million US dollars and took in a similar amount worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 from more than 43,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from over 2,300 votes, and a film critics' rating of 6 out of 10 rests on roughly 150 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- One of the reasons for creating this prequel was the decision to 'plug' a plot hole that had been repeatedly criticized and finally explain how 'Esther' got from Estonia to an American orphanage, as it would have been impossible otherwise, even with forged documents.
- Some actors of the same height as Isabel Furman had to wear platform shoes during filming so that, in scenes where they appeared next to her, she would look smaller than she actually was.
- According to director William Brent Bell, computer graphics were rarely used in the making of the film, with preference given to makeup, altered perspectives, and the use of stunt doubles.
- At the 18th minute, when Lina is swinging, a police officer in Russian uniform approaches her, although the plot is set in Estonia.
