In Ming dynasty China, the aging abbot of a Buddhist monastery high in the mountains plans to step down and invites several outsiders to advise him on choosing a successor. Among the guests are the wealthy patron Wen An, General Wang Chi and the scholar Wu Wai, but the general and the merchant each have their own reasons for coming. Both have brought accomplices and intend to get hold of a priceless Buddhist sutra kept at the temple, and each backs a different candidate for abbot in the hope of gaining access to it. Their schemes are complicated by the arrival of Chiu Ming, a man unjustly condemned, whom the abbot assigns to guard the scripture.
King Hu directed and wrote the film, which followed A Touch of Zen in his filmography. Hsu Feng plays the thief White Fox, with Sun Yueh as Wen An, Feng Tien as General Wang Chi, Tung Lin as Chiu Ming, Chen Hui-Lou as Lieutenant Chang Cheng and Paul Chun as Hui Ssu. It was a Hong Kong, Korean and Taiwanese co-production running 121 minutes.
The film holds a 7.3 rating on IMDb from roughly 1,700 votes and the same rating on TMDB from a smaller base of about 50 votes, indicating a solid reputation among those who have seen it.
