The Evil Dead follows five young people who travel to an isolated cabin in the woods for a weekend away. In the cellar they come across an old tape recorder and an ancient book bound in human skin, and when they play the recording they unwittingly unleash a demonic force. One by one the friends are possessed and turned against each other, leaving one of them, Ash, fighting to survive until morning.
Sam Raimi directed the film from his own screenplay, with Robert Tapert and Gary Holt producing. It was Raimi's first feature as director, made for a small budget and released in 1983; his next film was Crimewave, two years later. Bruce Campbell plays Ash, with Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManincor, Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly among the group of friends. The film has since become the starting point of a long-running horror series.
Made outside the studio system, the film became a commercial success, taking around 29 million dollars worldwide against its modest cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 from roughly 250,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 7.3, from far fewer votes. Those audience scores are notably lower than the critics' rating of 7.8 from 86 reviews, suggesting reviewers have tended to regard it more favourably than general viewers.
