Prey
Short description
Set among the Comanche on the Great Plains in 1719, Prey follows Naru, a young woman determined to prove herself as a hunter in a community that does not take her ambitions seriously. She joins a hunting party after a member of the camp is attacked, and while tracking what they believe to be a dangerous animal, she finds signs of something she cannot explain. The creature she pursues turns out to be an advanced alien predator, drawn to Earth in search of worthy opponents, and equipped with technology that gives it a decisive advantage over even the most experienced Comanche hunters. Their confrontation becomes the film's central conflict.
Dan Trachtenberg directs from a screenplay by Patrick Aison, with John Davis, Marty P. Ewing and Jhane Myers producing. It is Trachtenberg's second feature, following 10 Cloverfield Lane, and it sits within the Predator series, though its setting and characters stand apart from the earlier entries. Amber Midthunder plays Naru, with Dakota Beavers as her brother Taabe, Michelle Thrush as Aruka, Stormee Kipp as Wasape, Julian Black Antelope as Chief Kehetu and Dane DiLiegro as the Predator. Behind the camera were 156 credited crew members, and the cast numbers 31.
Made for a substantial studio budget, the film reached a wide audience after its 2022 release, drawing hundreds of thousands of votes and a strong rating on IMDb, with a comparable audience score on TMDB. Critics rated it slightly higher still, and with a 100-minute runtime it moves quickly through its action and science-fiction premise.
What's left behind the scenes
- The first film fully dubbed into the Comanche language.
- After eating the petals of an orange flower, Naruhime lowers her body temperature and becomes invisible to the Predator (who uses thermal vision), but remains conscious and active. In reality, lowering body temperature by just a few degrees leads to general weakness, chills, slowed reflexes, and an overall decrease in brain activity, up to and including hallucinations.
- The script was submitted for approval to two representatives of the Comanche tribe, who verified its authenticity.
- Dane DiLiegro, who played the Predator, worked on set exclusively by himself, without stunt doubles.
- The film depicts the mass killing of bison, but in reality, uncontrolled hunting of these animals for their hides and to destroy the food source for Native Americans did not begin until the 19th century.
- In the film, the Comanche live on the northern Great Plains (the modern US-Canada border), but in reality they lived much further south, in the area of modern Texas, and could not have encountered the French.
