Short description
Spider-Man: No Way Home picks up after Peter Parker's secret identity has been exposed to the world. Unable to keep his ordinary life separate from his responsibilities as a superhero, and with the consequences weighing on those close to him, Peter turns to Doctor Strange for help. The spell meant to make everyone forget he is Spider-Man goes wrong, and the damage to reality lets in visitors from other universes. Peter has to deal with the fallout of his own request while working out what being Spider-Man actually requires of him.
The film is the third Spider-Man outing directed by Jon Watts, following Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, and it comes after his earlier features Clown and Cop Car. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers wrote the screenplay, with Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal producing for Columbia Pictures, Marvel Studios and Pascal Pictures. Tom Holland leads as Peter Parker, joined by Zendaya as MJ, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan and Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon. The large supporting operation is reflected in 67 credited cast members and 202 credited crew.
Made for 200 million USD, the film took 1.92 billion USD worldwide, a return far beyond its cost. On IMDb it holds 8.2/10 from 846,355 votes, and on TMDB 7.9/10 from 23,162 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9/10 from 431 reviews places it level with the TMDB audience figure and only slightly below the IMDb one.
What's left behind the scenes
- Benedict Cumberbatch admitted that before filming began, he deliberately didn't read the script all the way through, so the ending would be a surprise to him.
- This film would never have seen the light of day if it weren't for Tom Holland, who insisted on negotiations between Sony and Disney. Under the terms of the new agreement between them, the events of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" (Jon Watts, 2021) still unfold within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Spider-Man is allowed to appear in both future Marvel Cinematic Universe films and Sony's "Spider-Man" franchise.
- According to Zendaya and Tom Holland, the way Willem Dafoe played the Green Goblin was genuinely frightening and made the reactions of other characters to his appearance even more believable.
- Sam Raimi was simply thrilled to see Doctor Octopus in the film's first trailer; he really liked the character's appearance and tentacles.
- Willem Dafoe agreed to return to the role of the Green Goblin on the condition that he be allowed to participate in as many stunts as possible during filming. He immediately stated that if all the stunts and action scenes were created solely through computer technology, he would not be able to convincingly play his role.
- The character played by Zendaya works at an establishment called Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop, which is shown both at the beginning and end of the film. Such an establishment actually exists and is located in Brooklyn, New York. The film was shot in the state of Georgia, so the set shown in the film is a recreation based on photographs.
- Jacob Batalon lost 46 kg (101 lbs) for his role in the film, although he admits he was losing weight not only for the role, but also because he made that decision himself.
- Tom Holland began filming with Jon Watts just two days after finishing work on Ruben Fleischer's action film *Uncharted* (2022). Nevertheless, *Spider-Man: No Way Home* was released first.
- Before work began on the film, Sony learned that a digital image of Alfred Molina, created for use in Sam Raimi's blockbuster *Spider-Man 2* (2004), had been lost. Sony intended to use it as a basis for computer processing of the character's image in the new project, but animators had to create everything "from scratch" instead. The actor had visibly aged in the intervening 17 years and had to be digitally "rejuvenated".
- As in the original Spider-Man film, Willem Dafoe again wore prosthetic teeth when playing Norman Osborn, and filmed with his own teeth when playing the Green Goblin.
- To keep the film's shooting a secret and prevent leaks regarding his own look, Willem Dafoe walked around the set in a cloak that completely concealed his costume. Once, Tom Holland accidentally bumped into him while he was wearing the cloak, and that's how they met.
- Despite the appearance of the Lizard played by Rhys Ifans and Sandman played by Thomas Haden Church, neither actor was present on set. For most of their screen time, the characters appear as supervillains depicted via computer graphics. The human forms of the characters were edited together from footage from previous films: 'The Amazing Spider-Man' and 'Spider-Man 3: Spider-Man 3'.
- Electro's appearance was redesigned for this film. The creators moved away from the blue look from 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2', which was based on the Ultimate Marvel comic universe, in favor of a design that more closely resembles the character's appearance from earlier comics.
- The Green Goblin received an updated costume in this film, which is more similar to the comic book version.
- Unlike in Spider-Man 2, Doctor Octopus's mechanical tentacles for this film were created using computer-generated imagery.
- Actress Lexi Rabe, who played Morgan, Tony Stark's daughter, in Avengers: Endgame, was supposed to appear in this movie, but she was not included in the theatrical version.
- Actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield helped develop their characters' backstories for this film, specifically what happened in their respective universes after the events of their movies. Tobey wanted to reveal as few details as possible about the fate of his Peter Parker after Spider-Man 3: Spider-Man 3. Andrew, however, wanted to surround his Peter with a gloomy atmosphere, as his last film, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, ended with the death of his beloved Gwen Stacy.
- Upon its release, the first teaser trailer for this film set a world record, garnering 355 million views within the first 24 hours.
- The scene where Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man helps Tobey Maguire's character with his back pain is a jab at the latter. While preparing for the filming of Spider-Man 2, Tobey had mentioned having back problems.
- At the 52nd minute of the film, MJ's full name is revealed as Michelle Jones-Watson, which is an homage to Mary Jane Watson from the comics and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man film trilogy.
- During the development of the plot, screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers realized that May Parker would play a role similar to that of Uncle Ben from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. Consequently, it was she who was meant to deliver the phrase, "with great power comes great responsibility."
- According to screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, the idea to let Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man save MJ came from director Jon Watts. They discovered this idea while watching a pre-visualization clip that compiled ideas for the final battle. The scene served as a counterpoint to the fact that Peter Parker was unable to save Gwen Stacy in the film The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
