Set in Rome in the 1970s, L'immensità follows the Borghetti family, who have just moved into an apartment in a newly built complex. Clara and Felice, the parents, no longer love each other but cannot bring themselves to separate. The household is increasingly held together only by their three children, and twelve-year-old Adriana, the eldest, is the most attentive witness to Clara's shifting moods and the growing tension between her parents. Adriana rejects her name and her identity and insists on being seen as a boy, a determination that pushes the family's already fragile balance toward a breaking point. Clara, meanwhile, pours her own longing for freedom into her children, seeking refuge from loneliness in their shared world.
Emanuele Crialese directed and co-wrote the film with Vittorio Moroni and Francesca Manieri. It is the second of the two features listed for Crialese, following Golden Door in 2006. Penélope Cruz plays Clara, with Luana Giuliani as Adri, Vincenzo Amato as Felice, and supporting turns from Aurora Quattrocchi, Elena Arvigo and Laura Nardi. The production was mounted on a budget of about 12 million dollars and returned roughly 3 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.4 from around 3,900 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6.3 from 236 votes, indicating a modest but comparable reception from both audiences.
