Death to 2020

A comedy special looks back at the events of 2020 through the eyes of a group of commentators who are not nearly as well informed as they present themselves to be. Combining fictional talking heads with real archival footage, the programme examines the year that much of the world wanted to leave behind, with each supposed expert offering their own skewed perspective on what happened. The result is a satirical portrait of a chaotic twelve months, delivered in the style of a documentary.

Death to 2020 was directed by Al Campbell and Alice Mathias. It is the first feature credited to Campbell in the available records, ahead of Cunk on Life in 2024. The screenplay comes from Charlie Brooker, Alan Connor and Jason Hazeley, and the production companies behind it are House of Tomorrow, Broke and Bones, and Jesse Collins Entertainment. The cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant, Lisa Kudrow, Kumail Nanjiani, Tracey Ullman and Samson Kayo in a series of roles that play on the idea of authoritative voices commenting on recent history. It runs seventy-one minutes.

The film received a critics' rating of 4.3 out of 10 from 22 reviews, while audiences were more favourable: it holds 6.8 out of 10 on IMDb from around 41,000 votes and 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB from 822 votes.
