On the Count of Three

Val is convinced that ending his life is the only way forward, but he doubts he can see it through alone. When his best friend Kevin turns out to be recovering from a suicide attempt of his own, Val takes it as an opportunity: the two of them can go together. Before that, though, they set out to settle a few outstanding matters.

On the Count of Three is a dark comedy that follows the two friends through the day they have chosen, examining what has brought them to this point and how they treat each other along the way.

Jerrod Carmichael directed the film, his first time behind the camera, working from a screenplay by Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch. Carmichael also produced and stars as Val, with Christopher Abbott as Kevin, Tiffany Haddish as Natasha, Lavell Crawford as Donny, JB Smoove as Lyndell and Henry Winkler as Dr. Brenner, among a credited cast of 32 and a crew of 85. The Canada–United States co-production runs 86 minutes. Its ratings are fairly consistent across sources: on IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 10,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4 from roughly 131 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 118 reviews places it broadly in line with how audiences received it.
