Short description
A wealthy industrialist's son, Ranvijay, has spent years abroad, largely cut off from the father he loves and admires despite the older man's long absences and emotional distance. He eventually comes home, determined to protect his family from the threats gathering around it, and his devotion takes a violent, single-minded form as he turns against anyone who endangers his father's life and business. The film follows that conflict between father and son as much as it follows the revenge driving it.
Animal is a 2023 Indian action crime drama directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, his second feature after Kabir Singh in 2019, and the third film listed in his directing career. He wrote the screenplay with Pranay Reddy Vanga and Suresh Bandaru, and Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar and Murad Khetani produced it. Ranbir Kapoor plays Ranvijay, with Anil Kapoor as Balbir Singh, Rashmika Mandanna as Geetanjali, Bobby Deol as Abrar Haque, Tripti Dimri as Zoya Riaz and Prem Chopra as Bade Daarji. The production, on a budget reported at 13 million US dollars, drew on a large credited cast and crew and returned 108 million US dollars worldwide. Audiences rate it 6.2 out of 10 on IMDb from around 114,000 votes and 6.1 out of 10 on TMDB, while the film critics' rating stands lower, at 4.1 out of 10 from 27 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The scene in which Ranbir Kapoor and his bodyguards cross the street was inspired by the famous cover of the Beatles’ Abbey Road album (1969).
- According to Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the slaughter scene that ends the credits was added at the suggestion of Ranbir Kapoor. This allowed the filmmakers to leave themselves the possibility of shooting a sequel.
- It took Sandeep Reddy Vanga four months to edit the film.
- Sandeep Reddy Vanga spent 2.5 years creating the film. He moved from Hyderabad to Mumbai. During the work on the film, he left the set for lunch only once.
- Initially, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga wanted to cast Sara Ali Khan for one of the roles. The actress even came for an audition. However, Vanga eventually abandoned this idea, believing that Khan would not be able to convincingly play the character and accurately portray her nature, so the role went to Tripti Dimri.
- The car with a machine gun was actually built for the film. It took four months to assemble the half-ton, three-wheeled steel vehicle with a multi-barreled machine gun.
