Short description
John and Jane Smith are a married couple whose relationship has settled into a dull routine. Neither knows the other leads a double life as a highly skilled professional killer, working for rival organizations. Their separate assignments eventually collide, and both are hired to eliminate the same target, forcing them to discover each other's secret. What follows is a conflict in which the two are set against one another while outside forces close in.
Doug Liman directed the film, the fourth of fourteen he has directed, arriving between The Bourne Identity and Jumper. Simon Kinberg wrote the screenplay, and the producers were Eric McLeod, Arnon Milchan and Akiva Goldsman. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt play the title couple, with Vince Vaughn, Adam Brody, Kerry Washington and Keith David in supporting roles. The production involved 101 credited cast members and 321 credited crew.
The film was released in June 2005 and runs 120 minutes. Made on a budget of about 110 million US dollars, it took roughly 487 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its cost. On IMDb, viewers rate it 6.5 out of 10 from around 590,000 votes; on TMDB it holds 6.7 out of 10 from far fewer votes. A critics' rating of 6.1 out of 10 from 209 reviews places it close to the audience scores rather than sharply below them.
What's left behind the scenes
- Brad Pitt left the project after Nicole Kidman withdrew. However, as soon as Angelina Jolie agreed to the role, the actor reaffirmed his participation.
- At the height of filming, Pitt left the project for 3 months to star in "Ocean's Twelve" (2004).
- Filming took place in San Marino, California.
- The film contains elements of the series "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" (1996) and Alfred Hitchcock's eccentric comedy "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" (1941).

- Nicole Kidman was the first choice for the role of Mrs. Smith. In turn, the role of Mr. Smith was initially intended for Johnny Depp, but the actor was so busy with other projects that he preferred to decline the offer. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Cate Blanchett were also considered for the role of Mrs. Smith, and Will Smith could have played Mr. Smith.
