Desire is a 1936 romantic crime comedy about Madeleine de Beaupré, a jewel thief who steals a valuable pearl necklace in Paris. To get it out of the country, she slips the necklace into the pocket of Tom Bradley, an American engineer on a driving vacation toward Spain. He crosses the border unaware that he is carrying the jewels, and Madeleine follows him, hoping to recover the pearls without arousing suspicion. Her plan grows complicated as the two spend more time together and genuine feelings develop between them.
Frank Borzage directed the film, which sits between A Farewell to Arms and Mannequin in his directing career. Borzage also produced alongside Ernst Lubitsch, and the screenplay was written by Edwin Justus Mayer, Waldemar Young and Samuel Hoffenstein. Marlene Dietrich plays Madeleine, with Gary Cooper as Tom. The credited cast numbers around thirty, among them John Halliday, William Frawley, Ernest Cossart and Akim Tamiroff. Made by Paramount, the film runs 95 minutes and mixes comedy, crime, drama and romance.
On TMDB, Desire holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from 54 votes, indicating a modest but generally favourable response from those who have logged it there.
