Happening

Set in France in 1963, Happening follows Anne, a bright literature student whose studies and hopes for a different future are thrown into question when she becomes pregnant. As her final exams approach and her pregnancy advances, she decides to act, knowing that doing so means facing shame, pain and the risk of prison. The film centres on her effort to take control of her own life within a society that condemns the desires of women.

Audrey Diwan directed and co-wrote the film with Marcia Romano, and it was released in 2021, the first of the two features she has directed to date, ahead of Emmanuelle in 2024. Anamaria Vartolomei plays Anne, with Kacey Mottet Klein, Luàna Bajrami, Louise Orry-Diquéro, Pio Marmaï and Sandrine Bonnaire among a credited cast of 23. Produced by Édouard Weil and Alice Girard for several French companies, it is a French drama running 99 minutes.

The film drew a critics' rating of 8.5 out of 10 from 172 reviews, higher than its audience scores: 7.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 14,000 votes and 7.2 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 530 votes. It earned about 2 million US dollars worldwide.
