Alma Felser is a scientist at Berlin's Pergamon Museum who agrees to take part in an unusual experiment in order to secure funding for her research. For three weeks she must share her life with Tom, a humanoid robot whose artificial intelligence has been tailored to her character and needs and designed to be the ideal partner for her. What begins as a professional obligation becomes something more complicated, since Alma turns out to be neither as simple nor as predictable as the programme assumes, and Tom is built to make her happy above all else.
Maria Schrader directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Jan Schomburg, and the film was produced by Lisa Blumenberg. It was Schrader's first directorial feature, followed by She Said in 2022. Maren Eggert plays Alma and Dan Stevens plays Tom, with Sandra Hüller, Hans Löw, Wolfgang Hübsch and Annika Meier among the supporting cast. The film runs 108 minutes and blends comedy, romance and science fiction.
Released in 2021, the German production took roughly 1 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 15,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 out of 10 from 379 votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 out of 10 from 143 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
