Short description
A man named Paul Cole awakens in a mysterious small town during the 1950s with no memory of his identity or arrival. As he recovers fragments of his history, he struggles to navigate a shifting sense of time and deceptive appearances to find his way home. He must determine which of his conflicting identities is authentic while attempting to reclaim his life.
This drama and mystery thriller was directed by Duke Johnson, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Stephen Cooney. It is the second film Johnson has directed, following his 2015 work Anomalisa. The movie stars André Holland as Paul Cole, alongside Gemma Chan and May Calamawy. Other cast members include Tracey Ullman, Toby Jones, and Simon McBurney, with a total of 20 credited performers.
Released in March 2025, the film has a runtime of 98 minutes and was produced in the United States by several companies, including TPC and Waypoint Entertainment. Audience reception is mixed, with a rating of 5.4/10 on IMDb based on 1,100 votes and a slightly higher score of 6.1/10 on TMDB from 23 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Aaron Taylor-Johnson was planned for the role of Paul Cole. In 2021, Ryan Gosling became a producer and one of the actors in the film, but he later decided against acting in it and was replaced by Andre Holland. Holland played Cole, while Gosling remained with the project as an executive producer.
- The screenplay is based on the novel 'Memory' by Donald E. Westlake. It was written in 1963 but not published until 2010, after the author's death. Ahead of the film's release in March 2025, the novel was renamed 'The Actor' and republished in January 2025.
