The Eight Mountains

The Eight Mountains follows Pietro, a boy from the city, and Bruno, the last child in a remote village in the Italian Alps. The two meet as children and form a bond that endures across four decades, even as their lives take different paths: Bruno stays tied to the mountain, while Pietro comes and goes. Their relationship becomes a way of reckoning with love, loss and where each of them belongs, set against the landscape of the Alps.

The film is a drama directed by Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch, who also wrote the screenplay together. It is van Groeningen's fourth feature, arriving after The Broken Circle Breakdown, Belgica and Beautiful Boy. Luca Marinelli plays Pietro and Alessandro Borghi plays Bruno, with Lupo Barbiero and Cristiano Sassella appearing as the two as children. The film runs 147 minutes and was released in December 2022.
