Silenced is a South Korean drama about a newly arrived teacher at a school for deaf children in Gwangju. Kang In-ho, a single father who needs money for his daughter's medical treatment, takes a position at the school and soon notices that something is wrong with the way the staff treat their students. With the help of a human rights activist, Seo Yoo-jin, he begins to uncover a long-running pattern of abuse and works to bring it into the open, against a faculty and local officials determined to keep it hidden.
The film is based on Gong Ji-young's novel, which drew on real events at the Gwangju Inhwa School for the hearing-impaired in the early 2000s. Hwang Dong-hyuk directed and wrote the screenplay, in the first feature in his directing career before Miss Granny and The Fortress. Gong Yoo and Jung Yu-mi lead the cast, with Kim Hyun-soo, Jung In-seo, Baek Seung-hwan and Jang Gwang among the 26 credited performers.
Made on a budget of about 2 million USD, the film took roughly 32 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 8 out of 10 from over 20,000 votes, and on TMDB 8.2 out of 10 from a smaller number of votes, while a critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 from five reviews places it below the audience scores.
