Short description
Austin Powers is enjoying married life in 1999 when he learns that his old enemy Dr. Evil has travelled back to the 1960s. Dr. Evil's aim is to steal Austin's "mojo", the quality that underpins his confidence and his appeal to women, leaving him a diminished spy. Stripped of it, Austin follows his adversary into the past, where he teams up with the American agent Felicity Shagwell to foil the plan and recover what was taken from him.
The film is a comedy adventure directed by Jay Roach, the second of the fourteen features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery in 1997 and Mystery, Alaska in 1999. Mike Myers wrote the screenplay with Michael McCullers and plays Austin, Dr. Evil and Fat Bastard, with Heather Graham as Felicity Shagwell, Verne Troyer as Mini-Me, Michael York as Basil Exposition, Robert Wagner as Number Two and Seth Green as Scott Evil. It was produced by Eric McLeod, Jennifer Todd and Suzanne Todd.
Made for about 33 million dollars, the film took roughly 312 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 262,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from about 3,800 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 91 reviews places it close to the audience scores.

- The entire film was shot in Southern California.
- Filming in the movie saved Heather Graham from a role as a porn star. The offer to audition came at a time when Graham, who hadn't filmed anything noteworthy for almost a year and a half, was ready to play the lead role in a film about lesbian love. After receiving a fee from Jay Roach for filming, the actress first bought a copy of a porn film she was considering taking a role in.
- Becky Dyroen-Lancer, captain of the US synchronized swimming team who won gold medals at the 1996 Olympic Games, served as the choreographer in the synchronized swimming scene at the beginning of the film.
- Felicity's weapon is a nickel-plated Smith & Wesson Model 19 with a mother-of-pearl inlaid grip.
- When Mike Myers and Heather Graham's characters are driving in a car, Austin notices that the British countryside is nothing like the landscape in California. The film itself was shot in California, and this scene was the result of improvisation; it wasn't written in the script, which is confirmed by the fact that Felicity says, “What?” when Austin asks her a question.
- One of the early trailers for the film contains a reference to another project. A voiceover says the following: “If you decide to see only one movie this summer, see ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,’ and if you decide to see two movies, you need to see ‘Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.’”
- When Dr. Evil tosses the mascot into the air, in the scene of the two Austin Powers running, the voiceover was done in slow motion, and Felicia speaks in the voice of Will Ferrell, or rather, screams: “Look out!” – right before the Powers collide.
