Ida "Red" Walker is serving a long prison sentence for armed robbery while also battling a terminal illness. Her son Wyatt has taken over the family's criminal business in Oklahoma alongside his uncle, but when a deal goes wrong, a local detective who is also part of the family joins an FBI agent in hunting down those responsible. As the investigation closes in, Wyatt is pulled between loyalty to his mother and the chance to walk away from that life.
John Swab wrote and directed the film, which followed his 2021 feature Body Brokers and preceded One Day as a Lion, Candy Land and Little Dixie, among later titles. Josh Hartnett plays Wyatt, with Melissa Leo as Ida, Frank Grillo as Dallas Walker and Deborah Ann Woll, Sofia Hublitz and Slaine in supporting roles. The production had a budget of about 12 million dollars.
Ida Red drew a mixed response. On IMDb it holds 5.6 out of 10 from roughly 2,700 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 5.7 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of under a hundred ratings. A critics' score of 5.2 out of 10 from 17 reviews places professional assessments slightly below the audience averages, though all three figures point to a modest overall reception.
