Short description

Æon Flux is set centuries after a virus has destroyed most of humanity, leaving the survivors in Bregna, a walled city run by a congress of scientists. Outside its walls, a rebel movement known as the Monicans opposes the government. Æon Flux, the group's most capable operative, is assigned to kill the city's leader. The mission leads her to question what she has been told about Bregna and about her own past, and she begins to uncover secrets that change how she sees both the government and the rebellion.

Karyn Kusama directed the film, the second in her career after Girlfight, working from a screenplay by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi. Charlize Theron plays Æon Flux, with Marton Csokas as Trevor Goodchild, Jonny Lee Miller as Oren Goodchild, Sophie Okonedo as Sithandra, Frances McDormand as Handler and Pete Postlethwaite as Keeper. It was produced by Gale Anne Hurd, Gary Lucchesi and Martha Griffin, and made for about 62 million dollars. It earned roughly 53 million dollars worldwide, less than it cost.

The film runs 93 minutes and is an action, science fiction and thriller. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from around 137,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 5.6 from about 2,500 votes. Film critics' reviews average 3.8 out of 10 across 107 reviews, a lower figure than either audience rating.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming of the movie began in August 2004 in Berlin and finished at the end of the same year.
  • During filming, Charlize Theron seriously injured her neck, forcing a month-long suspension of work on the film. Upon returning to the set, Charlize insisted on continuing to perform all the stunts herself. It is interesting that Ms. Theron's contract included a special clause regarding the use of stunt doubles, but the actress wanted to take the risk.
  • The film is based on the events of the eponymous animated series that aired on "MTV" in the 1990s.
  • To learn the art of ski jumping, Charlize enlisted the help of Terry Bartlett's circus group.
  • The lead actress, Charlize Theron, received an eight-figure fee for her work on the film. Interestingly, the contract was concluded even before Charlize's victory in the 2004 Oscar race.
  • The first news about the upcoming project appeared in 2003. At that time, Michelle Rodriguez was considered the most suitable candidate for the lead role.
