Alice Tate is a wealthy Manhattan wife and mother of two who has been married for well over a decade. Restless in her comfortable life and drawn to a saxophone player named Joe, she seeks help for a persistent backache from a Chinese herbalist, Dr. Yang. He treats her with herbs that do more than ease her pain, giving her unusual powers and pushing her out of the routine she has settled into.
Woody Allen directed and wrote the film, the eighteenth of the forty-eight features he has directed, arriving between New York Stories and Shadows and Fog. Mia Farrow plays Alice, with William Hurt as her husband Doug, Joe Mantegna as Joe, Alec Baldwin as Ed, Blythe Danner as Dorothy and Judy Davis as Vicky, among a credited cast of fifty. Robert Greenhut produced the Orion Pictures release, which runs 102 minutes.
The film opened in December 1990 and earned about 7 million dollars worldwide against a budget of roughly 12 million. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 16,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from 351 votes, while critics gave it 6.2 out of 10 across 28 reviews. Audience and critical responses therefore sit close together.
