Short description

Broadway showgirl Evelyn Nesbit is the object of affection of two men: playboy architect Stanford White and the wealthy but unstable Harry Thaw. Nesbit marries Thaw, but White’s continued pursuit puts him in the path of Thaw’s volatile temper. A fictionalized account of true events that occurred at the turn of the 20th century.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Marilyn Monroe was originally planned for the lead role, but she declined.
  • The film was based on the most famous murders of the 20th century; however, due to the so-called Hays Code (Hollywood's ethical code for film production), some plot elements could only be alluded to, and others had to be omitted entirely, as the film's themes included rape and murder—subjects that were prohibited from being shown on screen at the time.
  • During the trial of Harry Tow (1871-1947), given the public outcry over his actions, the jury sequestered themselves to reach a verdict. This was the first known instance in US history where a jury sequestered before delivering a verdict.
