In 1862, thirteen years after Ireland's Great Famine, an English nurse named Lib Wright is sent to a small village in the Irish Midlands to observe an eleven-year-old girl, Anna O'Donnell. Anna is said to have gone without food for months while remaining healthy, a claim her devout community embraces as a sign of divine favour. Lib is expected to watch the girl for a fortnight and confirm or refute the miracle, but as pilgrims and visitors gather to see Anna for themselves and the child's condition worsens, she pushes to uncover what is really happening.
Sebastián Lelio directs and shares writing credits with Emma Donoghue, on whose novel the film is based, and Alice Birch. It was the sixth feature Lelio had directed, following Christmas, Gloria, A Fantastic Woman, Disobedience and Gloria Bell, and it sits between that run and The Wave. Florence Pugh leads as Lib, with Kíla Lord Cassidy as Anna, alongside Tom Burke, Niamh Algar, Elaine Cassidy and Ruth Bradley. The production was mounted by Element Pictures with Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and House Productions, and it runs 108 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 49,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.6 from roughly a thousand votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 from 175 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores.
