Be Somebody

Set during the Republican era in Shanghai, this mystery blends comedy and drama. A group of ambitious film industry professionals gathers at a lavish estate to plan a movie based on a shocking local murder case, hoping the project will bring them fame. As they work, they discover that the actual killer is hiding among them and that the reality of the crime is more strange than their planned script.

The film was written and directed by Liu Xunzimo, marking the first entry in a list of two directed works that includes To Gather Around. The cast features Yin Zheng, Deng Jiajia, Yu Entai, Haoyu Yang, Chen Minghao, and Zhang Benyu. Produced by Maoyan Entertainment, Shanghai PMF Media, Uni Media, and 万合天宜, the production had a budget of 40 million USD. It performed well commercially, earning 132 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception was generally positive, with the movie earning a 6.9 rating on IMDb from 2,000 votes and a 7.5 rating on TMDB from 60 votes.
