Val is a 2021 documentary about the actor Val Kilmer, built largely from footage he shot himself over more than four decades. The material ranges from home movies he made as a boy with his brothers to film he recorded on sets and during the years he spent in major Hollywood productions. The result is a portrait of a performer who was often described as unpredictable, and of a life lived intensely.
The film also addresses Kilmer's later years. A cancer diagnosis in the 2010s damaged his voice, and his son Jack Kilmer narrates the documentary in his place. Alongside Val Kilmer himself, the cast includes Jack Kilmer, Mercedes Kilmer and Joanne Whalley, with archival appearances by Kevin Bacon and Fairuza Balk. Leo Scott and Ting Poo directed; Kilmer produced with Jordan Wynn and Brad Koepenick.
Val runs 109 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.6 from around 16,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2 from a much smaller number of votes. A film critics' rating of 7.8 from 123 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores on both platforms.
