Toula Portokalos is a thirty-something Greek American living in Chicago, still single and working in her family's restaurant. Her father, Gus, expects her to marry a Greek man and start a Greek family, while her mother, Maria, and her many aunts and uncles fill her life with advice and expectations. Restless and unsatisfied, Toula takes computer classes and, with her mother's help, talks her way into a job at her aunt's travel agency, where she meets Ian Miller, a high school teacher who is not Greek. The two begin seeing each other, and when her family finds out, Toula has to persuade them to accept a man who fits none of their plans for her.
The film stars Nia Vardalos, who also wrote the screenplay, as Toula, with John Corbett as Ian. Lainie Kazan plays Maria, Michael Constantine plays Gus, Andrea Martin appears as Aunt Voula, and Joey Fatone plays Angelo. Joel Zwick directed; it was the first of the two features listed for him, ahead of Fat Albert in 2004. Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson and Gary Goetzman produced.
Released in April 2002, the comedy-drama runs 95 minutes. Made for about 5 million USD, it took in roughly 369 million USD worldwide, an unusual return for a modest romantic comedy. On TMDB it holds 6.5/10 from 2,351 votes, a moderate audience score for a film whose commercial performance far outstripped its budget.
