Angie Scacciapensieri lives in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, and wants more from life than the tight-knit Italian-American neighborhood around her seems to offer. When she becomes pregnant by her boyfriend Vinnie, she decides to keep the baby but not to marry him, a choice that unsettles her family, her friends and the community. Her attempt to build something different takes her into new surroundings and a relationship with Noel Riordan, an Irish-American lawyer.

Martha Coolidge directed the film, which sits between Rambling Rose (1991) and If These Walls Could Talk 2 (2000) in her filmography.
