Dead for a Dollar

In the New Mexico territory of 1897, veteran bounty hunter Max Borlund accepts a job from a wealthy Santa Fe businessman: travel into Mexico and bring back his wife, Rachel Kidd, who is said to have been taken by Elijah Jones, a Black cavalry deserter. What Borlund finds across the border complicates the assignment, and his path crosses that of Joe Cribbens, a gambler and outlaw he once sent to prison and who has carried a grudge ever since. A Mexican crime boss, Tiberio Vargas, also has an interest in the situation, leaving Borlund to weigh the job he was hired to do against what he learns about the woman he was sent to retrieve.

Walter Hill directed and wrote the screenplay. Dead for a Dollar is the twenty-second film he directed, following The Assignment (2016), and it returns him to the western territory of earlier work. Christoph Waltz plays Borlund, Willem Dafoe plays Cribbens, and Rachel Brosnahan plays Rachel Kidd, with Hamish Linklater, Benjamin Bratt and Guy Burnet among the principal cast; 31 performers and 117 crew members are credited. The film runs 107 minutes.

Released in September 2022, the western drama drew modest notices. Its critics' rating stands at 5.6/10 from 58 reviews, and audiences are similarly divided, with 5.4/10 on IMDb from around 7,800 votes and 5.9/10 on TMDB from over 300 votes.
