Butcher's Crossing

In the 1870s, Will Andrews leaves Harvard behind and heads west, hoping to find purpose in the Colorado wilderness. He joins a buffalo hunting outfit run by a seasoned hunter named Miller, who claims to know of a remote valley where vast herds still roam. Will has money but no skill with a rifle or a skinning knife, and the expedition he finances carries the men far from safety and deeper into hardship than any of them expected.

Gabe Polsky directed and co-wrote the film with Liam Satre-Meloy, adapting John Williams's novel. It was Polsky's first narrative feature as director, followed in 2025 by The Man Who Saves the World?. Nicolas Cage plays Miller, with Fred Hechinger as Will Andrews; Jeremy Bobb, Paul Raci, Xander Berkeley and Rachel Keller round out the cast. The production was a British and American co-production.

The film drew modest audiences and mixed responses. On IMDb it holds 5.6/10 from roughly 7,400 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9/10 from a much smaller pool of about 220 voters. A critics' rating of 5.9/10 across 60 reviews places professional opinion roughly level with the audience scores rather than sharply apart from them, suggesting a western that found a limited but not dismissive reception.
