New Gods: Yang Jian

Set long after a war among the gods, New Gods: Yang Jian follows its title character, once a powerful deity and now reduced to working as a bounty hunter in a diminished heaven. Hired to track down a fugitive young man, Yang Jian discovers that the target is his own nephew, a pursuit that forces him to confront his past. The animated adventure blends fantasy and comedy as various hunters close in on the same goal.

The film is directed by Zhao Ji, his third feature after White Snake (2019) and New Gods: Nezha Reborn (2021), and precedes Tana (2026) in his filmography. Chen Mu-Chuan wrote the screenplay, with Lu Xi producing for Light Chaser Animation Studios. Kai Wang voices Yang Jian, joined by Ji Guanlin, Li Lihong, Li Lanling, Zhao Yi and Liu Xiaoyu among a credited cast of twenty.

Released in August 2022, the film runs 128 minutes and was made for about 20 million USD, going on to earn roughly 82 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6/10 from around 1,300 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.5/10 from 108 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8/10 from 19 reviews places it in similar territory to the IMDb audience score, with the smaller TMDB sample noticeably more favourable.
