Mad God follows a silent figure called the Assassin, who descends by diving bell into a ruined world. What awaits him is a labyrinth of decayed bunkers, strange landscapes and grotesque creatures, among them mad scientists and tortured souls. His mission involves a bomb and a city ruled by a monstrous being, though the journey through this underground realm of stairways, trapdoors and dark shafts does not go as intended. The film is dialogue-light and largely visual, built around handcrafted sets, creatures and puppets animated in traditional stop-motion.
Phil Tippett directed, wrote and produced the film, working from his own subconscious imagery. It is the third feature he directed, following Prehistoric Beast in 1984 and Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation in 2004, and it draws on his long career in visual effects and stop-motion animation. The cast includes Alex Cox as the Last Man, alongside Niketa Roman, Satish Ratakonda, Arne Hain, Jake Freytag and David Lauer in roles that mix live performers with animated characters.
Released in 2021, the film runs 84 minutes and comes from Tippett Studio. It holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 on IMDb from around 20,000 votes and the same score on TMDB from roughly 600 votes, while a critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10 from 92 reviews places it noticeably higher with reviewers than with general audiences.
