Krull
Short description
Krull takes place on a distant planet where two rival kingdoms hope to end their conflict by marrying Prince Colwyn to Princess Lyssa. Their wedding is interrupted when the Beast, an unseen power whose Black Fortress travels across the planet, sends its alien soldiers to seize Lyssa and carry her away. Wounded in the attack, Colwyn recovers under the care of the wise Ynyr and learns of the Glaive, a fabled weapon that may help him reach the fortress. He then gathers a small company of companions, among them the bumbling magician Ergo and a band of escaped convicts, and sets out to rescue Lyssa and free the planet from the Beast's advance. The film was directed by Peter Yates, the ninth of the thirteen features he made and the one that followed Eyewitness and preceded The Dresser, from a screenplay by Stanford Sherman. Ken Marshall and Lysette Anthony lead the cast, with Freddie Jones, Francesca Annis, Alun Armstrong and David Battley. Made with a budget reported at twenty-seven million dollars, it earned roughly seventeen million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.4 out of 10 from twenty-six critics, while on TMDB its audience rating stands at 6.1 out of 10 across more than six hundred votes, a gap suggesting viewers have been kinder to it than reviewers.

- The film was one of the most expensive films of its time.
- The Cyclops states that the fiery mares can run a thousand leagues a day. A league was defined as the distance a heavily armed man could walk in an hour, typically 3-4 miles (4-7 kilometers). This means that the fiery mares could cover around 3500 miles (5000 km) a day at an average speed of about 145 miles per hour (250 km/h).

- Twenty-three sets were built for filming.
- To prepare for his role as Prince Colwyn, Ken Marshall practiced sports such as horseback riding, fencing, and boxing constantly even before filming began.
- Sixteen Clydesdale horses were trained for several months for the role of the fire mares.
- The dubbing for the death screams of the «Slayers» was taken from «Journey to the Center of the Earth» (1976).
- The makeup for "Widow's Web" consisted of 23 elements.
- Filming took place over four weeks in Pinewood Studios' largest soundstage. It took over five months to transform it into a terrifying swampy landscape with jagged trees and bubbling pools. The special effects department created extremely realistic quicksand, in which up to twenty unfortunate technicians found themselves at one time or another. Director Peter Yates had to balance on a raft floating in one of the pools to see the entire set. To film particularly difficult shots, the cameraman in a wetsuit submerged himself in the "quicksand" or the pool.
