107 Mothers

Lesya is a young woman serving time in a women's prison in Odesa after killing her unfaithful husband in a crime of passion. She has given birth to her first child there, and the facility holds inmates of many ages, along with nurses and guards. Ukrainian law allows children to stay with their mothers until they turn three, after which they are sent to an orphanage. As her son Kolya grows, Lesya tries to regain early release and to rebuild ties with relatives who might take the boy in, while a lonely prison censor named Iryna watches her case closely.

Peter Kerekeš directed the film, his second feature after Velvet Terrorists (2013) and before Wishing on a Star (2024). He wrote the screenplay with Ivan Ostrochovský, who also produced. Maryna Klimova plays Lesya, with Iryna Kiryazeva as Iryna, Lyubov Vasylyna, Vyacheslav Vygovskyi, Oleksandr Mykhailov and Iryna Tokarchuk in supporting roles. The production is a Ukrainian, Slovak and Czech co-production, and it runs 90 minutes.
