Dick Tracy is a 1990 adventure comedy crime film set in a stylized version of 1930s Chicago. Detective Dick Tracy, a dedicated and incorruptible police officer, takes on Big Boy Caprice, a gangster who has seized control of the city's organized crime after eliminating his rivals. Tracy's mission grows more complicated when the nightclub singer Breathless Mahoney pursues him, unsettling his relationship with his girlfriend, and when a faceless figure known as The Blank enters the conflict with plans to remove both Tracy and Big Boy. Tracy also looks after a street kid called Kid.
Warren Beatty directed and produced the film, playing the lead role. It followed his earlier directing work Heaven Can Wait and Reds, and came before Bulworth and Rules Don't Apply. Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr. wrote the screenplay, and the large cast includes Al Pacino as Big Boy Caprice, Madonna as Breathless Mahoney, Dustin Hoffman, James Caan and Charlie Korsmo. With 73 credited cast members and 89 credited crew, the production was substantial, and its reported budget of 47 million dollars was covered by a worldwide box office of about 104 million dollars.
Audience response has been moderate. On IMDb the film holds 6.2 out of 10 from around 70,000 votes, and on TMDB it also has 6.2 from about 1,000 votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 from 59 reviews places critical opinion slightly above the audience scores.
