Bill Hayward comes out of prison on parole after eight years and returns home to find that his two sons, now eleven and fifteen, have been left to look after themselves by their mother. He has no interest in taking on the role of a father and plans to move on, while the older boy has been raising his younger brother alone. When social services start asking questions, Bill agrees to stay with the boys for a week so that they can present themselves as a family and avoid being taken into care. The arrangement forces him to confront what kind of parent and what kind of person he has been.
