Rising Up at Night is a documentary focused on the people of Kinshasa as they navigate frequent power outages. Despite the development of a massive power station intended for the region, the population continues to struggle for consistent electricity. The film explores the intersection of religious faith, hope, and disappointment, depicting how residents use makeshift lighting to manage their daily routines and celebrations while finding beauty in the city's nocturnal environment.
Directed and written by Nelson Makengo, this project follows his 2019 film Up at Night. The production was a multinational effort involving companies from Germany, Belgium, Burkina Faso, Qatar, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including RTBF, Magellan Films, Twenty Nine Studio & Production, and Film Five. The film was produced by Rosa Spaliviero and Dada Kahindo Siku. Released on February 20, 2024, the documentary has a runtime of 95 minutes.
