Malqueridas

Malqueridas is a documentary focusing on mothers serving long prison sentences in Chile. Separated from their children, these women form bonds of mutual support and affection with other inmates who share their experiences. This solidarity serves as a means of emancipation and resistance. The film reconstructs their lives and collective memory using clandestine images and videos recorded by the women themselves on mobile phones, which are prohibited inside the facility.

Tana Gilbert directed the film, which follows her 2022 project No star. The screenplay was written by Gilbert alongside Paola Castillo and Javiera Velozo. Produced by Dirk Manthey Film and Errante Producciones, the movie features Karina Sánchez and Natalia Abarca appearing as themselves. This joint production between Germany and Chile has a runtime of 75 minutes.
