Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island

Set during the Universal Century 0079 war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, this animated film follows Mobile Suit pilot Amuro Ray and the crew of the White Base. While travelling toward Belfast for supplies, they are diverted to a small island known as the Island of No Return, tasked with dealing with enemy forces believed to be hiding there. Instead of soldiers, Amuro finds a group of children, an enemy Zaku, and a mysterious man named Cucuruz Doan. What begins as a routine operation turns into something far less straightforward, and Amuro must work out how to get everyone off the island. The story expands an episode from the original 1979 television series, which director Yoshikazu Yasuhiko was involved with.

Yasuhiko had already directed two earlier Mobile Suit Gundam compilation films in the early 1980s, then moved on to Arion and Venus Wars, before returning to the franchise with a Gundam: The Origin entry in 2017. This 2022 film is the sixth feature he directed. Toshizo Nemoto wrote the screenplay, and Toru Furuya returns as the voice of Amuro, a role he had played since the original series. Shunsuke Takeuchi voices Cucuruz Doan, with Ken Narita, Toshio Furukawa, Megumi Han and Hideki Nakanishi among the supporting cast, part of a credited cast of 35 and a crew of 75.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.8 from 514 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 from 25 votes, indicating a modest but positive reception from those who have seen it. Its 109-minute runtime accommodates a self-contained story set between the larger events of the One Year War.
