Short description
Crash follows James Ballard, a film producer whose life in a grey, anonymous city changes after a violent car collision. He and Catherine, his wife, have been seeking new kinds of excitement, and the crash opens a path neither expected. In the hospital he meets Helen Remington, who was driving the other car, and through her he encounters Vaughan, a figure who stages recreations of famous accidents. Drawn into a hidden circle of people who share an erotic fixation on cars, collisions and injured bodies, James pulls Catherine into the same world, where danger and desire become inseparable. The film is based on J. G. Ballard's novel.
David Cronenberg wrote, produced and directed the film, the twelfth of the twenty-two features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between M. Butterfly and eXistenZ. James Spader plays James Ballard, Holly Hunter is Helen Remington, Elias Koteas is Vaughan, and Deborah Kara Unger, Rosanna Arquette and Peter MacNeill appear in supporting roles. The production, mounted across the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States, cost about 9 million dollars and returned roughly 3 million worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 72,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from a much smaller electorate. A critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 64 reviews places professional opinion somewhat above the audience averages, though all three scores sit in similar territory.

- The film featured erotic scenes between Ballard and the secretary; Cronenberg cut them, believing that the actors already had amazing 'chemistry' and shouldn't have it undermined by side relationships.
- Vona’s phrase – “A car crash is a productive, not destructive event” – is a direct quote from Ballard’s other novel, ‘Crash’, which was published in 1970, three years before ‘Crash’.
