Maradona by Kusturica is a documentary portrait of the Argentine footballer Diego Maradona, made by the Serbian director Emir Kusturica, who also appears on screen and wrote the screenplay. The film follows Maradona from his beginnings in Buenos Aires through his years in Naples and his time in Cuba, and it deals with his career highs, including the 1986 World Cup, alongside his struggles with drugs and alcohol. Rather than telling the story in straightforward order, it mixes archive footage with conversations, music and short sequences, and it also takes in his family, his friendships with Fidel Castro and Hugo Chávez, and his political views. José Ibáñez produced.
The film is a Spanish and French production, released in 2008 with a runtime of 90 minutes. It is the eighth feature directed by Kusturica, arriving after All the Invisible Children and following such earlier films as Underground and Black Cat, White Cat. The cast consists largely of the subjects themselves: Maradona as himself, the musician Manu Chao as himself, and Kusturica as himself, so the director is present both behind and in front of the camera. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from roughly 6,800 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.3 from about 158 votes, indicating a modest but solid response from viewers.
