Short description

This documentary follows Nepalese climber Nirmal Purja and his team as they attempt to scale the fourteen highest mountains in the world. Starting in 2019, the project aimed to reach every summit over 8,000 meters within a single seven-month season, a goal intended to challenge previous records and demonstrate the limits of human endurance. The film documents the team's preparations and the various challenges they encountered during the journey.

Directed by Torquil Jones, this was the first of two listed films in his career, followed by She Looks Like Me in 2024. The screenplay was written by Jones and Gabriel Clarke, with Anna Barnes serving as producer. The production was a collaboration between the United Kingdom and the United States through Little Monster Films and Noah Media Group. The cast features Nirmal Purja appearing as himself, alongside contributions from Jimmy Chin, Reinhold Messner, and Klára Kolouchová, with archive footage of Conrad Anker.

The film was released on November 12, 2021, with a runtime of 101 minutes. It has been well received by viewers, earning a rating of 7.7/10 on IMDb based on 33,000 votes and a rating of 7.3/10 on TMDB from 402 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was edited from 100 hours of footage shot by Nirmal Purja and Nepalese climbers. The ascent itself was filmed over 6 months and 6 days from April to October 2019.
  • After conquering his first eight-thousander, Annapurna I in Nepal, on April 23, 2019, Nirmal Purja (who plays himself in the film) had earned only 15% of the required amount and was forced to remortgage his own home in the UK.
  • During filming, Nirmal Purja was assisted by Nepalese climbers working in shifts; some of them even appeared on screen, but only Purja conquered all 14 eight-thousanders.
